Yamamoto Tansen was a Kano-painter in Kyoto. He learned painting from his father Yamamoto Sôsen(1679-1760) and was fifths master of theYamamoto family of painters which was active until shortly before the Second World War. Wooden box inscribed by the artist (tomobako). Inscribed on the lid: Ryûkan gengetsu, inside the lid: Keinen ga awasete dai; seal: Imao Eikan and Keinen. Second outer box of laquered pine wood with inscriptions of a previous owner.

Imao Keinen was born in Kyoto where he lived all his life. He was a pupil of Suzuki Hyakunen but studied also other styles. 1868 he opened his own studio and began teaching.
